The Lake Erie Monsters - the American Hockey League affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche - enter their fifth year of play at Quicken Loans Arena in 2011. The Lake Erie Monsters began with the revival of the dormant Utah Grizzlies franchise. The team was relocated to Cleveland, playing as the Lake Erie Monsters in the North Division.
The team name, referring to Bessie, a creature of local folklore, was announced at a press conference by Dan Gilbert, owner of the Monsters, Cleveland Cavaliers NBA basketball team, Quicken Loans Arena and Quicken Loans.
